GHS wins opener

— Grangeville’s first match of the year yielded a quick victory in straight sets over Cascade (25-4, 25-19, 25-20) last Thursday night, Sept. 3. Madison Brown and Abigail Stowell had four kills apiece, and six different GHS players hit for high percentages: Brown, Stowell, Darby Finnegan, Rachel Kelley, Kenzie Kennedy, and Sarah Wilson all put pressure on Cascade’s defense.

Grangeville’s strongest attack came from the serve line, where Hailey Sullivan had six aces, Kally Arnzen had seven, and Wilson served 14 balls without an error.

Grangeville led the first set 11-0 and cruised, but Cascade briefly led the second set.

Grangeville led the third set from start to finish, but Cascade came from four points down to tie it at 10-all, 11-all and 13-all before GHS pulled away.

Sullivan’s serves, punctuated by a kill apiece from Stowell and Finnegan, turned a 14-14 tie into an 18-14 lead, after which Cascade never closed within three.

Coming — Grangeville (1-0) is slated to play Sept. 10 at Troy, with the home opener scheduled for 6 p.m. Sept. 14 against Kamiah.
