Riggins levy: maintain our current operations

Letter to the Editor

Facts for the upcoming school levy in Riggins on May 17, Tuesday 8 a.m.-8 p.m.! The state of Idaho continues to under fund education, leaving schools without the needed funds to meet educational requirements, kind of a catch-22! This levy replaces last year’s, this is not an additional levy; it supplements our schools’ income to help maintain our current operations. This levy will show on your December 2016-2017 tax assessment bill. The cost is the same as last year, $4.16 per thousand of the assessed value of your property, minus the homeowner’s exemption. The school and administration have adjusted the budget and kept the levy amount the same again this year.

We’ve been our own district for over nine years and we will continue to need a supplemental levy every year as long as the State of Idaho continues its current form of funding for public education; most schools across the state need a levy every year. Our school is vital to the community of Riggins. Our community needs families to survive, and families need and want a good quality school. Property owners and renters are both stakeholders in our schools and have equal voting rights. Paying rent includes helping pay the taxes for the homeowner! Keeping a thriving community keeps our property’s value! Your vote is important, make sure to get yours in!

You can get an absentee ballot from the Idaho County Courthouse by calling 983-2751. You can also register to vote the day of the levy with a valid ID and proof of address. Thank you for supporting our local youth, they deserve it! I’m so proud every year from the support we get; plus 80 percent! Truly amazing, but don’t let that make you think we don’t need your vote!

Levy Committee Chair
