Defense, two double-doubles lift GHS in league opener

Having trailed the visiting Maniacs 17-14 after the first quarter, the Bulldogs made an adjustment against Orofino’s hot shooting and went on to win the Central Idaho League girls basketball opener 73-25 Thursday night, Dec. 8.

McKenzie Kennedy finished with 19 points including three three-pointers. Along with JaKaili Norman’s double-double (20 points, 13 rebounds), Kennedy nabbed 11 boards on an offensively balanced night at GHS.

Nine Bulldogs scored as Orofino’s lead turned into a blowout, with a 26-5 run during the second quarter reversing Grangeville’s fortune.

Up next for Grangeville are a Dec. 15 home game against Kamiah, a Friday night visit to Genesee Dec. 16, and a Dec. 20 trip to Salmon River.

Prairie 59, Kamiah 27

KAMIAH — Leah Higgins’s 10-and-10 double-double and big scoring nights from PHS stalwarts Angela Wemhoff (16 points) and Chaye Uptmor (14) keyed Prairie’s early surge and strong finish last Thursday night, Dec. 8. The Pirates led 18-3 after one quarter and went on to win 57-29, largely on turnovers that PHS turned into points in transition.

Up next for Prairie is a visit from Whitepine League powerhouse Lapwai this Friday night, Dec. 16. The Pirates will play at Asotin next Tuesday, Dec. 20.
