CLEARWATER VALLEY -- Do you believe it’s only the first day of winter? Happy winter solstice! From Latin “sol” (sun) and “sistere” (stop), it is the day that the sun appears to stop moving across the sky. People around the world have celebrated it for thousands of years on this shortest day of the year, traditionally with singing, dancing, feasting and bonfires. So light a fire in your fire pit, or a candle or just sit by your woodstove with food and drink and welcome the return of the light and longer days.
Are you ready for Christmas? Some local stores may close early on the 24th. On Christmas Day, the Conoco Sunset Mart will be open if you need any last-minute supplies. (Tom Cat fuel pumps available, but the store is closed.) In Kamiah, the Chevron and Conoco stores will both be open. Since Christmas day is a Sunday, banks, credit unions, post offices, libraries, Forest Service offices will be closed on Monday the 26th. Thank you to all of the people who respond to emergencies- law enforcement, fire fighters, emergency medical services and road crews who are working or on call Christmas weekend!
If your kids start getting bored after Christmas, Dena Puderbaugh, Kooskia librarian, invites you to a free showing of the movie, “The Incredible Journey” on Thursday, Dec. 29, at 6:30 p.m., in the community room. This Disney classic chronicles the adventures of two dogs and a cat left in the care of family friends. They miss their people and travel across the wilderness to find their way home with surprise encounters along the way. Popcorn and apple juice will be provided. Although chairs are available, you’re welcome to bring a camp chair, blanket or pillow to be more comfortable. Children should be accompanied by an adult. Call the library 926-4539 for more info.
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and peace to all!
