Grangeville junior wrestler Blake Courtney is off to a strong start.
“We’ve had two tournaments so far,” he said. “My record is 8-1. I’m doing pretty good.”
Courtney’s best match so far, he said, was against Prairie’s Conrad Duman.
“He’s pretty skilled,” Courtney said. “He’s a lot taller and wider and that’s challenging. It gives me an idea how to wrestle other guys like that.”
Courtney got the upper hand in the match when he anticipated one of Duman’s moves.
“Then I just out-strengthed him,” Courtney said. “He was trying to go for a lot of takedowns, so when he went, I sprawled and tried to get behind him. When I got behind him, I was able to lock on to his hip and rode him out.”
Courtney explained the hold was a “tilt.”
“It’s an overlock and an underhook,” he explained. “When you roll him over to the side, you get points for that. They’re on their stomach and their arms are out in front of them.”
Applying an overlock over the arm on the near side and an underlock under the opponent’s far-side arm, the wrestler pops his hips and rolls him to his shoulders to score a near-fall.
“I won by pin,” he said.
Tough practice has helped the Bulldogs prepare.
“We’ve mainly been conditioning to get our lungs in shape,” Courtney said. “Then we’re working on moves that we’re comfortable with. Coach is really good. He knows what we’re messing up and gives pointers for that individual.”
Grangeville next hits the mats Dec. 29 at Pomeroy.
