The state basketball tournaments are just around the corner, but local contenders will first face the winnowing wind of their respective district tournaments.
Whitepine League at Lewiston (LCSC)
The Clearwater Valley girls’ season ended with a 54-17 loss to Potlatch last Saturday, Jan. 30, in the play-in round of their District II tournament.
The Kamiah girls avoided the potential elimination game by edging out Potlatch by a 53-40 final score on Jan. 23, and will play their first postseason game at 6 p.m. today, Feb. 3, against Troy. The Kamiah-Troy winner will play No. 1 seed Lapwai — the top-ranked team in the 1AD1 classification — at 6 p.m. Feb. 5.
The Feb. 3 late game pits Genesee against Potlatch with a matchup against No. 2 Prairie — ranked second in the classification by statewide media — looming at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5.
The 1AD1 District II title game will be played at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 12. As with the prior games, the district title game will be played at the LCSC Activity Center.
A third Whitepine League team could reach the state tournament by way of the regional playoff to be held Feb. 13 in Craigmont. Elimination games will be at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Feb. 8, and at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 10.
Salmon River at New Meadows
By virtue of a tiebreaker, the Salmon River girls hold the No. 1 seed in the 1AD2 District III tournament, though they are ranked fifth in the classification by statewide media. Top-ranked Council will face the Tri-Valley-Wilder winner at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, while the Savages will face the Garden Valley-Cascade winner at 6 p.m., also at New Meadows.
The district title game is set for 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9, with the top two placers claiming state berths and a third to face a play-in game.
Grangeville at Deary, Genesee
Should they win through, the Grangeville girls will play Orofino Feb. 6 at Deary. The rest of the tournament is to be played at Genesee. GHS is likely to face St. Maries at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 8 and again at 6 p.m. Feb. 11.
