RIGGINS The Salmon River boys had designs on winning one of their last two regular season games, and had a two-point difference late in their finale against Council last Wednesday, Feb. 10. The Lumberjacks pulled away, 70-55, but with six minutes to go, Riley Travis tallied a layup and fouled out Council’s Paolo Celada, bringing the Savages within 47-45.
Council struck back with a basket, and extended the lead to seven, 52-45. After the Savages hit a couple of free throws, cutting it to five, Council’s Jared Neal converted a tough layup to force the Savages into the end game with 3:28 to go.
The Lumberjacks made their crunch-time free throws to seal an undefeated league record in addition to the Long Pin Conference’s top seed at the upcoming District III tournament in McCall.
Canyon Harper (15 points) and Alex Diaz (11) led the Savages in scoring, while Council’s Ryan Rosengrant ran amok with 34.
Last Friday night, Feb. 12, Cascade beat 67-59.
The District III tournament opens Thursday night, Feb. 18, with Salmon River taking on Tri-Valley, followed by Wilder-Garden Valley and Cascade-Meadows Valley. With a win, SRHS would play Council at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20. The title game will be Feb. 23.
