Responding to Brett Haverstick, Moscow, on disparaging remarks [Feb. 10 issue] concerning Sheriff Giddings.
Brett, you are clueless with a poison pen. As a resident of Idaho County, I do not take kindly to your remarks directed towards our good sheriff. If you were a person of any integrity, you could have contacted Doug Giddings in person to question his actions. I know for a fact that he would have been professional and courteous in addressing your concerns regarding the Oregon debacle.
Sheriff Giddings has been instrumental in creating a culture of community cooperation with law enforcement in Idaho County. We do not have an adversarial relationship with the good men and women serving as deputies, police officers and ISP officers residing in this county. Our LE officers take the extra steps to ensure this community they are one of us by all of the community activities they support. Perhaps Idaho County is unique, but it is abundantly clear that citizens and LE officers work together to ensure our community is a safe place to live. I believe Sheriff Giddings has made it clear to his officers their mission is to serve and protect!
That said, I trust Sheriff Giddings’ judgment. He knows his community and its residents. I truly believe his motivation to help with the Oregon standoff was to “de-escalate” the situation. Unfortunately, the FBI has not taken him up on his offer and he has accepted the order to “stand down.” In every encounter I have had with Sheriff Giddings I have been amazed at the calm, cool-headed persona he presents to the community.
I sign off with a heartfelt proclamation of my appreciation for the county sheriff’s department, and the police departments of both Grangeville and Cottonwood. May God protect you as you serve Idaho County.
