KUNA Grangeville had an early lead against Cole Valley Christian, but the Chargers eventually pulled away, 48-35, despite shooting just 12 percent from the field during the first half. Grangeville went 10-for-62 for the game, but put together a 14-3 run that staked out a 16-8 lead during the second quarter last Friday, Feb. 19.
The capstone for that sequence was a jumper by Hailey Sullivan, who finished with 10. McKenzie Kennedy, who finished with 18, kept the lead at seven with a pair of free throws late in the second quarter. But after that, the Chargers outscored Grangeville 40-19.
Earlier in the week, Grangeville played West Side within five points, leading 4-3 on free throws by Sullivan, 8-7 on a layup by Jolene Chmelik, 10-9 on a jumper by Chloe Dame, 13-11 on a triple by Paige Lindsley, 17-16 on a foul shot by Rachel Kelley, and, early in the fourth quarter, 29-28 on a foul shot by Sullivan. But after that, West Side pulled ahead and held on to win 47-42.
Grangeville finished 13-10 and beat out Central Idaho League rival St. Maries for the district title. The squad will graduate seven seniors, including state tournament starters Sullivan, Ahni Anderson and Kelley.
