County’s expenditure is misguided, a waste

Letter to the Editor

I once thought it was a passing thing. But after three years in a row, I figure it’s about that time of year for our commissioners to skim another $5,000 off our taxes and send the check down to attorney Ken Ivory, in Utah, so that he can continue to taunt the people who own public lands, you and me.

I’m involved, first because some of these tax dollars are mine, and second, because these are the lands where my family and I camp, hunt, fish, backpack, snowmobile, ride horses and ATVs, ski, enjoy free access and freedom, in general.

I object to this expenditure. It is misguided. It is a waste. And, I certainly hope that none of these funds end up purchasing snacks or coffee creamer for the Bundy Boys in Burns. Why not keep these dollars working legitimately in Idaho County?

The Idaho Republican Platform, Article X, states that Idaho should manage and administer all state and federal lands. I am a registered Republican but I don’t support this article. In fact, I strongly object to it.

I don’t want to even crack open the door for my public lands and resources to be sold or traded to billionaires, real estate consortiums, foreign business interests, or other special interests so that I might have to pay fees for access and uses that I currently enjoy for free.

Let’s not turn Idaho into a place like New Jersey or West Virginia.

Public lands belong in public hands.
