Riggins News: Queen tryouts set for this Sunday

— My Sweet ’16 quote for this week is actually three quotes from Dr. Seuss, Theodor Suess Giesel, whose birthday is today, March 2. “Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you!” “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” Happy birthday, Dr. Suess, March 2! I do hope all of you will read some Dr. Seuss books today to lift your spirits and go “On Beyond Zebra”… another of my favorite Dr. Seuss books.

Riggins Rodeo queen tryouts are this Sunday, March 6, at the Riggins rodeo grounds beginning at 11 a.m. with horsemanship followed by a barbecue at 12:30 p.m. Contact Jenna Cereghino by e-mail at rigginsroyalty@gmail.com or call 451-3253. The annual Riggins Rodeo will be held the first weekend in May, Saturday, May 7, and Sunday, May 8, with the rodeo cowboy breakfast and parade to be held Sunday morning.

Tuesday, March 8, is “100th Day” at Riggins Elementary and Salmon River High School students! Celebrations will be ongoing… and this means only 80 days left for this school year!

Riggins Elementary and Salmon River High School will hold its Science Fair Thursday, March 17. Students are working on their projects and will present them to judges and fellow students and teachers as well as some parents.

WWB, Women With Bait is nearing the end… only 10 days of fishing left. March 12 is the final day for those women catching lots of fish and having fun.

Salmon River Art Guild sets activities

Salmon River Art Guild will have its “March Miniature Madness” show and sale March 12 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. (PST) 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (MST) at Hoot’s Café in White Bird. This is a great opportunity to have lunch, visit with the artists and enjoy art. All items are miniature in size and are priced at $50 or less. Admission is free. SRAG is celebrating 52 years of creating art along the Salmon River from 1964-2016 and is pleased to host the art show and invites you to enjoy a day of art.

Salmon River Art Guild is offering an “Asian Inspired Gourd Vessel” workshop by Alan Sweeney Saturday, April 2, at the Gresham Studio from noon to 3 p.m. or 4 p.m. (PST), 1-4 p.m. or 5 p.m. (MST). Fee is $35 for members/$55 for non-members which includes a gourd kit to complete the project. Contact the guild by e-mail at srag.idaho@gmail.com or call 839-2493 to join. The class is limited to 12 students.

Salmon River Art Guild is also offering an “Acrylic Class with Valeria Yost” Saturday and Sunday, April 23-24, at the White Bird Community Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (PST), 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (MST). Fee is $80 for members/$100 for non-members. This is the second class taught by Valeria. She sells her paintings to “Leanin Tree” and “Wild Wings,” to name two. There will be a Monte Carlo Night at Summerville’s Saturday, March 12, at 5 p.m. to help raise funds for the jet boat races. Bring all donations to Summerville’s prior to Monte Carlo Night for the live and silent auctions. They have plenty of room to store donations. Any and all donations will be accepted and are greatly appreciated! The 2016 Salmon River Jet boat Races will be held Friday, Saturday, Sunday, April 15, 16, 17, with fireworks over the river if enough donations come in to pay for the fireworks. If you would like to donate to the fireworks, you may send money to Riggins Chamber of Commerce.

Easter is March 27… Riggins Elementary Easter egg hunt will be Saturday, March 26.
