Riggins News: Laritz, Shepherd are volleyball MVPs

Daylight Savings Time begins Sunday, Nov. 6; Time to fall back an hour Saturday, Nov. 5, before you go to bed.

Election Day is this coming Tuesday, Nov. 8, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., at The Salmon River Heritage Center or at the Canyon Pines RV Park depending on your precinct area. Be sure you are registered to vote and please get out and vote.

Congratulations to our Lady Savages volleyball girls and our Savages football boys for each winning the title of Conference Champions for 1A Division II District 3.

The Lady Savages went to State Tourney last Saturday and lost in a five-game play, then won in a three-game play, then lost in a four-game play. Congratulations to Coach Paula Shepherd and her awesome team of volleyball girls who played well all season and made it to state. We are all proud of you!

Congrats to SRHS volleyball players Sarah Laritz and Chevelle Shepherd, Long Pin Conference co-MVPs, Maddie Tucker was named a first teamer, Payton Branstetter was named a second teamer, and Miranda Hofflander was named an honorable mention by the league’s coaches. Sarah Laritz and Maddie Tucker were named to the Long Pin League’s Senior All-Star team. Go Lady Savages!

Blood drive is Nov. 15, 16

RIGGINS — Riggins Fall Red Cross Blood Drive will be held at the Salmon Rapids Lodge Tuesday, Nov. 15, from 2-7 p.m., and Wednesday, Nov. 16, from 8:30 a.m.-l p.m. To make an appointment, call Kris at 628-3572 or Joy at 628-3224.

The Salmon River Savages will play the Deary Mustangs this Saturday, Nov. 5, at 1 pm in Riggins at the SRHS football field in the first playoff game for the right to go to the State Football Tourney. Go Savages!

Gage and Mariah, 6-year-old son and mother, are really excited to teach “Strike a Pose” Nov. 7, 14, 21, and 28 at Yoga in the Canyon. Elementary school aged-children and their parents are invited to this fun, playful, creative experience. These classes present you and your child with the opportunity to cultivate trust, deepen your relationship, explore body awareness, and create positive self-image through affirmation and play. Deadline to register is today, Nov. 2. Total cost is $15 for all four classes. Class sessions run from 6 -6:40 p.m.

Bill Mitchell, longtime Riggins resident died Oct. 13, 2016, in Boise. Bill was born in Boise in 1946, however, spent most of his life in the central mountains of Idaho, Donnelly, McCall, and Riggins. Services for Bill were held Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Riggins Assembly of God Church. I will long remember his cute little smile. Bill was a quiet, private man who loved life. He was very adventurous from the time he was a little boy and enjoyed a wide variety of activities; he went to college for 13 years attaining a bachelor degree at University of Idaho, a degree in meteorology from Idaho State University, and a degree in Biblical studies from Montana School of the Bible. Bill’s complete obituary was printed in Oct. 26 issue of the Idaho County Free Press.

Betty B. Pennington, long-time resident of Riggins went home to be with her Lord and Savior Tuesday, Oct. 25. Betty was born July 18, 1931, in Blackwell, Okla. Upon retirement, Betty and Gene moved to Riggins and built a house there to spend their golden years in the beauty of God’s creation. Betty was a member of the Little Salmon River Bible Church in Pollock. Memorial services will be held at a later date at the Little Salmon River Bible Church. The Riggins Christmas Giving Tree is on display at Umpqua Bank. We encourage you to take a tag from the Giving Tree and help a family out this Christmas! Gifts may be taken unwrapped to the Riggins City Hall anytime; gift wrapping will be Tuesday, Dec. 20, at the Riggins Community Center, 9 a.m. until finished. Food boxes will be readied Wednesday, Dec. 21, from 9 a.m. to noon. Food boxes and gifts will be distributed Wednesday, Dec. 21, noon-3 p.m. Call Michelle at 628-4020 with any questions.

The Riggins Christmas Tree Lighting and hayride will be Friday, Dec. 3.

“Winter Ball” fund-raiser for the 2017 Salmon River Jet Boat Race and sponsored by Salmon River Catering, Seven Devils Steakhouse and Saloon, and Idaho Banana Co., will be held Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Riggins Community Center.
