Savages survive Deary rematch

1AD2 football

— Last time Salmon River saw Deary, they pulled a fast one to beat the Mustangs in the state title game.

Two of the key players involved in a three-headed trick play that decided the 2015 1AD2 title game were on hand for the rematch last Saturday, Nov. 5 — and this time the Savages simply ran the Mustangs over.

Tucker Boyd — one of the heads in the famous “globe of death” Salmon River pulled off at the climax last year — connected on two early touchdown passes, one apiece to Gabe Gonzalez and Clayton Shepherd — and Harper scored a total of four rushing touchdowns.

Harper’s second of the game came during the third quarter and put SRHS ahead 28-6, after which Deary surged to within one touchdown.

When Deary recovered a fumble in the end zone, the Savages lead was trimmed to 28-20.

Harper broke a 46-yard touchdown run in reply, but a misfire on the conversion attempt kept Deary in the contest.

The Mustangs connected on a 36-yard passing touchdown, and cut the lead to six with a conversion run.

Harper answered with a 71-yarder, and Deary struck back with two minutes to go.

According to the Lewiston Tribune, that’s when Harper broke another long touchdown run — a “30-some-yard run” culminating with the Salmon River standout turning down a touchdown and kneeling down at the Mustangs one yard hash.

Harper totaled 266 rushing yards and Boyd threw for 136, including 57 yards to Gabe Gonzalez, whose catches converted three fourth downs.

Coming — Salmon River (9-1) faces a long playoff drive for the semifinal to be held at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at Holt Arena in Pocatello.

There the Savages will play Sawtooth West league runner-up Carey (7-3), which has not faced any opponent in common with the Long Pin Conference champion Savages.
