Grangeville senior Hunter Connolley scored one goal this week against Priest River and assisted on another as the Bulldogs soccer squad moved toward the district tournament in program history.
GHS will likely face St. Maries in the first round when play opens Saturday, Oct. 8, at Rathdrum.
If GHS advances in the tournament, they may have a rematch against Timberlake — the only Intermountain League team they’ve lost to this season.
(GHS has yet to play top-seeded Bonners Ferry, which represented the district at state last year.)
Since the last time GHS saw Timberlake, the Bulldogs have greatly improved their short passing. As a central midfielder, Connolley has been in the middle of it.
A cold rain was of no help to Priest River the first time Grangeville visited that field, and GHS fared just as well last Friday night, when the Bulldogs met the Spartans in Orofino.
“It was a pretty fun game,” Connolley said. “The weather was better.”
For the opening score, Illyana Barela finished off a pass from Connolley.
“I got a ball fed foward to me from Ryan (Ruklic) or Amador (Perez) or somebody,” he said. “The goalie bobbled it and I kind of tipped it away from him. I saw Illyana and tipped it up over the goalie’s head toward her. She finished it.”
During the second half, a ball bounced away from a Priest River defender to Connolley, who with several touches outpaced two defenders who might have had an angle and another one who pursued but couldn’t stop him from netting it off the inside edge of his foot.
