— There will be a taco feed and dessert auction to raise money for the Sew Help Me Quilters Quilts of Valor projects. It will be at the Elk City School at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29.

Elk City School will also have a taco seasoning which will be for sale at the taco feed. The money raised will be used for field trips and eighth-grade graduation. This will be a good opportunity to connect with people you haven’t seen all summer, meet new people, and help two great groups.

Dr. Jack Secrest will be at the Elk City Clinic Oct. 6. Call St. Mary’s Clinic for an appointment at 962-3267.

Meetings: Water & Sewer on the 4th at 7:00 PM.

Birthdays (last week also): Chris Thompson

History: The next few history blurbs will be about the Elk City School. I have a copy of “Rules for School Teachers” from 1915 that were among the artifacts I received from a teacher named Mildred Cleveland who taught school here back then. It contains 11 admonitions and I will share some now and the rest next week: No. 1. You will not marry during the term of your contract. No. 2. You are not to keep company with men. No. 3. You must be home between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless attending school functions. No. 4. You may not travel beyond the city limits unless you have the permission of the chairman of the board. No. 5. You may not ride in a carriage or automobile with any man unless he is your father or brother.” (Photo is of Mildred Cleveland during that time).
