Filings opened today for positions up for election in the Nov. 7 election, which include for city council, and recreation, cemetery and fire districts.
Deadline for petitions of candidacy to be turned in is next week; Friday, Sept. 8. Those interested in running for a position should contact the clerk of that district to determine eligibility. Filing a petition of candidacy requires either signatures of five qualified electors from the respective district, or paying a $40 fee.
Area city councils have the following positions open:
Cottonwood: mayor (two-year term), held by Shelli Schumacher; one two-year term councilor (held by Linda Nida) and two four-year-term councilors (Ron Grant and Pat Holthaus). Contact city hall: 208-962-3231.
Ferdinand: mayor (Scott Oliver) and two councilors (Michele Lindgren and Ron Riener), all four-year terms. Contact city hall: 208-962-5640.
Grangeville: mayor (Bruce Walker) and three councilors (Beryl Grant, Wes Lester and Scott Winkler), all four-year terms. Contact city hall: 208-983-2851.
Kooskia: two councilors (Mark Anderson and Dannette Payton), both four-year terms. Contact city hall: 208-926-4684.
Riggins: mayor (Glenna McClure) and two councilors (Roy Akins and Jonny Wilson), all four-year terms. Contact city hall: 208-628-3394.
Stites: mayor (four-year term), held by Gerald Cathey; and two four-year-term councilors (Joshua Bradley and Bonnie Shannon). Contact city hall: 208-926-7121.
White Bird: mayor (four-year term) held by Homer Brown, two four-year-term councilors (Barbara Lowe and Paul Sand). Contact city hall: 208-839-2294.

- Cemetery: Clearwater, Cottonwood, Ferdinand, Grangeville, Kamiah, Keuterville, Pine Grove (Kooskia), Riggins, Winona, White Bird and Woodland.
- Fire protection: Cottonwood Rural, Grangeville Rural, Harpster and Kamiah.
