Entering her 25th year as head Kamiah volleyball coach, Leah York has a senior-led squad while other teams that have recently led the Whitepine League are going through changes: Troy lost its best player to the normal turnover and Prairie has a first-year head coach.

“Prairie, they’re always competitive, of course, so those should be good matches,” York said. “It’s kind of a transition year for Troy, but they lost their best hitter.”

Genesee figures to be a top contender — those Bulldogs have been league-leaders throughout recent memory — but had significant graduation.

“They’re always good — they play year-round and Troy does too,” York said. “Even during basketball season they play volleyball.”

York, of course, likes her senior group’s attitude and approach.

“We had two team camps in July. The girls did well. They work hard,” she said. “They’re a great bunch.

“Lacey Kludt played spring volleyball and you can tell she’s had a lot of touches,” York said. “Davi Murphy is a great hustler and our most experienced setter, and Chynna Wilcox and Ashley Flerchinger are our physically strongest players.”

Wilcox and Flerchinger align in the middle, and Tela Loewen-Ridley is both a spark plug and a vocal leader at libero.

“Volleyball is such an emotional rollercoaster, but these girls have such great attitudes,” York said. “There’s no pouting. They’re happy kids who keep each other excited.”

The squad is looking forward to the season, which continues Aug. 31 against Orofino.
