Is it not time to return to spirit of holidays?

Letter to the Editor

With Thanksgiving just over and Christmas near, it might be well to ponder the good fortune we have being born in this part of the world!

Contemporary news might suggest that too many living in our country today do not realize how fortunate they are to be citizens here!

Consider some known facts. First, since the Revolutionary and Civil wars, we have never had to deal with a major war involving foreign troops in our country! Not too many other nations can make that claim!

Second, we have never really lost a war! No foreign nation has put their soldiers on our soil in a military way, threatening our citizens.

And our standard of living? It is well-accepted that we have living conditions that are the envy of the world. A study of immigration figures over hundreds of years tells us that the people flow has always been into our country, and not out of it! That is the direction people want to move today... into our country!

Finally, is it not true that our freedom to live and choose the way of life wanted is the envy of people in other countries today? Despite the loud cry coming from some here about injustice and racial discrimination, how many people choose to leave our shores and seek better conditions in other lands?

There must be an answer to these questions! This article claims that it is our religious background that supplies the answer! The folks who celebrated that first Thanksgiving were hardworking, God-fearing and Christian people, for the most part, who recognized that the birth of Jesus was very important in their lives. Christ, whose birthday we celebrate soon, and His message of love of neighbor and the Ten Commandments supply the answer we are seeking!

But should it not need be asked? Is His message of personal responsibility and love of neighbor not slowly disappearing today? And is it not time to return to the spirit of those holidays today?
