Grangeville junior Ryan Ruklic was one of a couple of Bulldogs to score 14 points at Kamiah last Thursday — and Ruklic was one of the tall players who battled Orofino’s bigs effectively during a key league game the prior Monday, Feb. 6.
But the Maniacs wound up winning when their tallest player — 6-8 Brandton Chatfield — made the winning play in the paint.
“It was a tough game,” Ruklic said. “I missed some easy shots I probably shouldn’t have missed...that was definitely not our best game.”
Grangeville got a quick rematch, with the Bulldogs hosting the Maniacs Tuesday night, Feb. 14 — the last night of the regular season.
On game day, Ruklic said, “We’ll play a lot better tonight...we know how to handle them and it’s going to be a different game tonight. Hopefully we’ll have the school come out to support us.”
He pointed out Orofino’s rebounding during the earlier game and said, “we can’t have that happen again. I’m not going to allow it, Pat (Schumacher) isn’t going to allow it and Luke (Stokes) is not going to go for that.”
Ruklic described the team’s progress as a matter of having gained varsity experience.
“We came in as a young team, with two seniors and not a lot of guys who had played varsity before,” he said. “I think the maturity we’ve gained throughout the season, we’re progressing and that comes with winning on a buzzer-beater at Genesee and playing two close games the last two weeks against Genesee and Orofino.”
The district tournament is set to run Feb. 20-23.
