Mystery of America’s Political System

Letter to the Editor

I am completely mystified at how Americans vote and how legislators completely ignore the people’s wishes on important issues. Polls on public lands show that people by a wide margin support all Americans retaining ownership and not individual states or private sources. The political entity, Big Red, soon may be renamed, Land Takeaway Political Party (LTPP), has ordered their elected officials that all federal public lands are to be disposed of. This includes giving people’s lands to states, selling, trading away, etc., no matter what the people want despite all polls show a big majority of people strongly oppose LTPP politicians doing this. And why don’t elected officials vote the will of the people? Has our political system gone whacko?

A large majority of people oppose federal land takeaways by the LTPP politicians, but at the same time they vote as a majority for LTPP politicians who want to take these lands away from the people! These are a huge majority who use public lands for outdoor recreation that brings in three-quarters of a trillion dollars annually to the nation’s economy! Does this make any sense? Maybe in the former Soviet Union, but America?

Many people would like to know the reason people who support our public lands in polls and at the same time vote for party candidates they know will try to take them away, i.e., Murkowsky Amendment, where 95 percent LTPP senators voted to take away public lands. What is going on?
