Frankie Zumwalt, Blake Courtney and Tristan Bledsoe placed in their respective weight classes at the 16-team Joseph Tournament last Friday and Saturday, Jan. 6-7.
With 10 competitors among more than 200, coach Tyler Bransford said his team competed well.
Zumwalt and Courtney — both wrestling at 145 pounds — each lost only one match. The eventual champion in the weight class beat Courtney in the semifinal and Zumwalt in the final.
Zumwalt finished 3-1 and was his “usual dominant self” up to the finals, Bransford said.
“In the final, his opponent was able to slow the match down and get control,” Bransford said, “but Frankie was still in it with 10 seconds to go. He had to go for broke in short time and got pinned.”
For Courtney, who went 4-1 and placed third on the day, “It was a good day considering he was our second kid at that weight,” Bransford said. “He wrestled very well, showing his quickness and technique.”
At 152, Bledsoe posted a 3-2 record and placed fourth.
“He did well,” Bransford said. “He got caught a couple of times on minor mistakes his opponents capitalized on.”
Coming — Grangeville is set to compete at Orofino this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 13-14, and is set to visit Potlatch next Wednesday, Jan. 18.
