ELK CITY The first day of summer ... what adventures await you? Maybe books will take you there if you can’t go yourself – like to Alaska with a young Irish girl during the gold rush called “Staking Her Claim,” or climbing Mt. McKinley with the first Alaskans to do it called “The Sourdough Expedition”, or growing up in the remote Alaskan bush called “Born on Snowshoes.”
There will be a summer reading program starting today, Wednesday, June 21, at the Library called, “Going Places...reading takes you there!” I know I like to read about real people, real places, and real happenings. Sue Phillips shared that “readers can sign up any Wednesday during the summer and will receive a ‘passport’ that will be used to track books kids read over the summer. The program will end with a party, prizes and books for participants. Any children living in or visiting Elk City are welcome and encouraged to come join us! Also, we have lots of new books, for adults and children, purchased from donations received at the beer and wine tasting...come in and check us out!” The library will be open weekly from 1 to 4 p.m., on Wednesdays.
Remember, if you would like to donate aluminum cans to REACH Club, take your cans to the Community Hall just below the post office on Sundays or Tuesdays and leave them to the right of the front doors. REACH Club appreciates these donated cans! If anyone has a place in which they can be stored, please let Sue Phillips know as we can only store them at the Community Hall until this fall.
