Grangeville’s tennis squad won most of its matches Monday night, March 20, largely on the strength of the team’s returning state qualifiers, but also by way of a good start from a slew of first-year competitors.
Lewiston had not had a match yet this season, GHS coach Kerry McCulley pointed out.
First year boys doubles team junior Ryan Ruklic and sophomore Michael Told overcame an loss to finish the evening with a 2-1 match record.
The veteran girls doubles duo of senior Maicee Conner and senior Kenzie Kennedy fell behind early against a scrappy LHS doubles team 1-4, but rallied to win their match 9-7, McCulley said.
“I was very pleased with the performance of all of my team tonight,” he said.
Seniors Rachel Kelley and Sophia Bush both won singles matches, as did junior Rebecca Kaschmitter.
Senior TJ Wiltse teamed with junior Jordan Reuter to win one boys doubles match and teamed with senior Jon Asker to win another.
Juniors Marie Hauger and Brenda Gomez won a girls doubles match, as did freshmen Maykayla Roberts and Grace VanGunten.
Girls doubles play also saw pairings of Bush with sophomore Chloe Dame, sophomore Jolie Tosten with sophomore Yadira Rojas, Tosten with junior Kate Lutz, Gomez with Dame, Kelley with Roberts, VanGunten with senior Kortney Sims and Lutz with Gomez.
In mixed doubles, Sims and Asker won, as did sophomore Holland Forsmann with Wiltse.
Next, Grangeville is set to play at Clearwater Valley at 4 p.m. March 23.
