Riggins man presumed drowned in accident

Vehicle located Monday upside down in the river

Derek L. Olson

— Search efforts continued along the Salmon River as of press time for Derek L. Olson, 35 of Riggins, presumed drowned following an early morning Monday accident.

Olson’s family has been notified, and deputies will continue to patrol the river in an effort to locate the victim’s body.

At 12:05 a.m., the Idaho County Sheriff’s Dispatch Center was advised a vehicle had possibly gone into the Salmon River just south of Riggins near milepost 192.4 on U.S. Highway 95.

A witness reported hearing tires squeal and saw taillights go into the river. Deputies found evidence at the scene that substantiated this witness account. Responders searched throughout the night and were unable to locate the vehicle.

At 8:30 a.m., the vehicle was located at milepost 193 upside down in the river. With the assistance of J.I. Morgan Logging of New Meadows, the unoccupied vehicle was recovered from the river. Olson is believed to have been swept out of the vehicle and into the river.
