— It’s on to national competition for three local students.

Grangeville High School juniors Kate Lutz and Hailey Russell and Grangeville Elementary Middle School sixth grader Hollen Hays each received first place in the State of Idaho PTA Reflections art contest.

Lutz will represent the state in the literature category while Russel’s project is in the photography division and Hays is in film production.

The three have been invited to Pocatello April 8 to accept their awards and present their projects at the annual PTA conference. Their projects will then be sent to Washington, D.C., for the national contest.

Three other GEMS students received awards of merit at the state level. They are: Teryn Baldus, first grade, visual arts; Isaiah Bybee, second grade, literature; and Maya Hernandez, fifth grade, visual arts.

The PTA Reflections contest is a project the PTA takes on each year. This year’s theme was “What is Your Story?” Pieces had to travel through local and regional judging before making it to the state level. Last year, Russell’s photography project also went to nationals where it received an honorable mention award.
