— After nearly a quarter-century in charge, Loren Anderson turned the reins over to Jeff Maxwell, new fire chief for the Elk City Volunteer Fire Department, at a Saturday, May 6 ceremony.

Anderson has served as ECVFD chief for the last 24 years, and he and his wife, Cocoa, have been fixtures within both Elk City and the county as far as involvement in fire department and other local emergency services. According to ECVFD board chairman Jon Menough, after the loss of Anderson’s granddaughter in an Elk City house fire, Loren became more deeply involved in the fire department. Since then, he and Cocoa have spent much of their time and resources trying to ensure that no other families in the community had to deal with that kind of loss. Anderson will continue to assist with the department during this transition.

Maxwell has been a resident of Elk City since retiring here in 2000. As a youth, he would visit relatives in the community in the summer and said he fell in love with the area. He is a Navy veteran and has served with the fire department off and on throughout his time here. In addition to working with the fire department, he and his wife, Nita, enjoy helping out with community events, including annual fireworks displays and helping with Christmas in the Park.
