When eighth grader Alli Kohrman told her mom, Breezi, that the Grangeville Elementary Middle School’s chessboards were not all complete and were a little worn, Breezi put a call on Facebook that received donations from across the United States. May 5, she was able to donated11 nice, wooden chessboards and pieces to the GEMS chess club that meets during lunch in Mr. Peeple’s classroom. Peeples stepped in after science teacher Mr. Mark Willig died in 2016. Students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade meet twice a week to play or watch during lunch. Peeples said if students don’t know how to play they are invited to learn or can simply watch if they wish. Here, students play on some of the existing chessmats.
