Gavin Branson will pursue an education degree on scholarship at Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton, Ore., with an eye on becoming a history teacher — and towards becoming a basketball coach.
“Blue Mountain is a smaller school and very much like Prairie High School, all the team members are close and end up going to classes together,” Branson said. “It has been a long dream for me to play basketball in college and I’ve definitely put in the work.”
Having attended Nezperce, Branson moved to Oklahoma because, he said, his dad saw value in facing the competition seen in that part of the country.
“You’re playing D1 athletes who are creating highlight films and you can constantly play basketball there,” he said. “My schedule ended up being 36 hours a week just constantly in the gym. You don’t have time to mess around.”
Among his favorite PHS memories, Branson recalled the moment Patrick Chmelik put in the winning shot during the waning seconds of the Pirates’ district tournament win over Lapwai in February.
