ELK CITY Elk City is invited to the eighth-grade graduation ceremony for Marshal Chlebowski, Thursday, June 8, 5 p.m., in the Elk City School gym. The last day of school is June 15.
The Memorial Day celebration was held at the traditional location – the bridge over Elk Creek. Two veterans were honored this year with Quilts of Valor made and presented by the Sew Help Me Quilters of Elk City and Dixie. Pictured with the recipients are, left to right, Vickie Guthrie, Debbie Layman, and Susie Borowitz.
Private First Class, E-4, Robert “Bobby” Leonard Johnson entered into service in the U.S. Army at Fort Lewis, Wash., March 6, 1968. He serviced in Vietnam and left the Army March 5, 1970, at Fort Hood, Texas. He received the following commendations, medals, ribbons, and honors: Vietnam Gallantry Cross, Civil Actions Honor Medal, Expert Rifle Award, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
Bobby came to Elk City in 1973 with Malcolm Layman to visit property Malcolm’s Dad had purchased. He’s been coming back and staying here in Elk City part of each year since that first year.
Tech. Sergeant David Curtis, United States Air Force, was also a recipient of a quilt. Dave joined the Air Force in 1960 at Caldwell, Idaho. He served at nine different bases in the Continental United States as well as overseas at Loan (pronounced just like it’s spelled, like a “loan” from the bank), France – 1962-1964, Vietnam – 1966-1967, Murphy Dome Air Force Station in Alaska – 1970-1971, and Hickham Air Force Base in Hawaii - 1972-1975. Dave retired in 1981 while serving at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Washington following twenty years of service.
Dave and Kathy visited Kathy’s brother, Ken Case and family and his in-laws, C.O. and Viola Case in Elk City and fell in love! They have lived here for 10 years. Dave has served as an officer at the local VFW Post No. 8311 many times in the last decade.
Sue Phillips shares that the “REACH Club is happy, very happy, to announce they have acquired a place to store donated aluminum cans. The Elk City Alliance will allow REACH to store the cans in the Community Hall until demolition brings on the building, possibly as soon as November. Please leave you bagged and (smashed if possible) aluminum cans in front of the Community Hall on Sundays and Tuesdays. They will be moved into the hall on Mondays and Wednesdays. The REACH Club is very appreciative for these donated cans....it is a great fund-raiser for REACH, if you know of or have a place that we can store these cans, let Sue Phillips or Nichele Slover know as we will have to have another place this fall.”
Meetings: American Legion on the 7th; VFW on the 8th; Water and Sewer on the 9th.
Birthdays: Gary Carpentier and Derrick Chlebowski
Anniversaries: Jake and Lacey Chaffee, Gabe and Rebekah McManus, and John and Teresa Enos.
