— If you’re looking for a great deal for dinner Friday night, (Sept. 8) head up in the hills to the Big Cedar Schoolhouse for a Navajo taco, soft drink and dessert for only $5 per person. Dinner is from 5-7 p.m. This annual event by the Big Cedar homemakers women’s group raises money to maintain the historic 1920 schoolhouse, recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places. If you haven’t been to the schoolhouse it’s about 10 miles southeast of Kooskia at 948 Red Fir Road, at the junction with Big Cedar Road.

If you’re interested in bird watching and want to get out of the heat this weekend, head to Lolo Pass Visitor Center on Saturday, Sept. 9, for a walking tour of Packer Meadows from 9-11 a.m. with Valerie Bayer and Vicki Cox of the Montana Natural History Center. (Wear boots and bring binoculars if you have them.) Following the bird walk, Kate Davis, a raptor expert from Montana will present “Birds of Prey along the Lolo Trail.” She will bring some birds with her to help with her presentation. Both interpretive events are free and family-friendly. If you have questions, contact the Lolo Pass Visitor Center at 208-942-3113.

Looking for something fun and creative to do next Monday? Candice is teaching another painting class for adults on Sept. 11 from 6-9 p.m., at the Log Yard Restaurant in Kamiah. She calls her events Art and Soul canvas parties which are held periodically at restaurants or private parties. Each aspiring artist paints the same image during the class. The cool thing is after three hours you go home with a finished painting. This week’s image is a lovely one called Fire Light and is a campfire in the forest with the night sky in the background. Check her Facebook page at “Art and Soul canvas parties by Candice” for more information and to see Firelight and postings from past classes. Space is limited, she asks that you message her on Facebook to sign up and prepay the $35 for the session.
