— Next week, Sept. 24-30, is Banned Books week, an annual awareness campaign by the American Library Association and others that celebrates our freedom to read what we choose. The Clearwater Valley has a great library system- Prairie River Library District, with branches in both Kooskia

and Kamiah. I found a quote on the Kamiah Community Library’s Facebook posts that books “make people who are not like us more human.” Reading about something new exposes us to different ideas. I’ve found some interesting books on the shelves or through interlibrary loan. On Oct.19, the Kamiah Community Library is planning a book discussion on George Orwell’s book “1984,” a book that various libraries have banned in the past and continues to have relevance now. This should be a great discussion so check with the library for a copy of this book if you want to join in.

Last weekend I enjoyed some peace and quiet on the homefront. Saturday began with us watching a moose walk past our house, first one I’ve ever seen in my neighborhood! I enjoyed the cooler weather and the bounty of fruits and vegetables, picking and canning tomatoes, peppers and plums. This area is an amazing place for growing food!
