Compression of compassion

Letter to the Editor

Hysterical and hypocritical invective have no place in political dialogue.

ICE and Homeland Security are working within the constraints of court rulings and are the law of the land.

Fact: Politically, there is a pathological hatred of Donald Trump.

“Compassion” is just another weapon of that hate.

Compassion as virtue today is nothing more than emotional solipsism for those whose concern are for others and seldom leads to actions that improve the lot of illegal migrants and minorities.

We suffer from conspicuous compassion for the postcolonial Third World.

The morbid fascination with the misery and suffering of Western colonial and imperialist oppression is galling.

Conspicuous compassion and ostentatious self-loathing is the essence of white guilt and white privilege, where self-flagellation overcomes the original sins of imperialism and colonialism.

This neurosis empowers our domestic and foreign policy agendas.

We should be adjudicated by political debate on the facts, consequences, and costs, not by emotional appeals, sentimental rhetoric, and conspicuous compassion.
