Mountain View School District 244 did the right thing Monday night. Even if it hurt a little.

When federal forest funds came through following the passage this spring (52 percent approval) on a $3 million levy, the board could have counted the extra $426k as money in the bank. After all, there are cost of living increases needed, HVAC systems that need replaced and parking lots that need paved.

But they didn’t keep it. The board chose to lower the levy amount and, thereby, allow district patrons to pay less in property taxes.

The board is made up of volunteers from the surrounding communities who are trying to do the right thing and be good stewards of money that is entrusted to them to educate the area’s children. Their insight to return more than $400,000 to taxpayers not only shows they understand money is hard to come by, but also they understand the need for transparency and fairness.

Remember this when the next board-related issue arises and the motives of trustees are questioned.
