Courtesy tips for those who litter on roadside

Letter to the Editor

While picking up roadside litter, I had the idea to pass along a few courtesy tips for you folks. These will be relayed to you in no particular order of importance. It all has to be picked up.

  1. In steep terrain, throw to the upside of the road.

  2. Empty all twist top containers and screw lid back on.

  3. Both adult and child diapers should be placed in a tight plastic sack, so they won’t take on more water.

  4. Those jugs with urine in them should not have the lid too tight so they can easier be undone. Containers must be empty to reduce the weight in the trash bag.

  5. When throwing beer bottles at road signs, pick the uphill side of the road and where there are no rocks, so when you miss it, it is less likely that they will be broken.

  6. The smokeless tobacco cans don’t weather very well and they separate, which doubles the effort to pick them up. So, you will want to pitch them in a more open area.

  7. Compact discs can be a real irritation, but rather than just pitching them, keep them in the vehicle with you and periodically just stare at them and stay worked up.

  8. The items that blow out are another story. Just don’t let that bother you much because someone else will just pick it up.

The people who read this probably won’t need the advice, but they could possibly pass it on verbally to someone who would find it enlightening.
