Grangeville’s Chase Adkison — already small-town famous for his baseball exploits with a Lewiston American Legion team last summer — has been making an impact for the GHS football and wrestling teams.
Adkison knows baseball.
Last summer, he caught on with the LC Twins — the Lewiston area’s preeminent club team — and last August, the Twins reached the American Legion’s World Series. He plans on playing for a Spokane-based travel team this summer.
“The success rate for this team for players who want to go on to college ball is 100 percent,” he said.
He’ll anchor the GHS baseball team this spring, but before that, he might have a trip to Pocatello.
Adkison won his weight class (195) at a Coeur d’Alene-area wrestling tournament last weekend; this weekend, he and his fellow wrestlers will have a chance to qualify for the Feb. 23-24 state meet.
He said he figures he can reach state with a third-place finish this weekend at Kamiah. For 2A districts, the top three finishers in each weight class qualify.
Adkison’s match wins at the Lake City JV tournament on Saturday came against lesser competitors, but still added up to his first tournament win as a wrestler.
But cracking the top-two — even in district — would be a major coup.
“I like wrestling,” Adkison explained. “My teammates and the coaches have been great. They know I don’t know what I’m doing out there, and they’re working with me.”
Potlatch’s Layton Paul and Orofino’s George Bolling are favorites in the district and at state.
