Prairie boys press on to district title game; Lapwai tops Kamiah

Boys basketball

— Potlatch almost had them. But the Prairie boys got the points they needed from Hunter Chaffee (14) and Spencer Schumacher (12) to pull out a 42-38 district tournament win over Potlatch Tuesday night, Feb. 13.

The Pirates defense proved decisive after their offense started out slowly, as, according to the Lewiston Tribune, Prairie held Potlatch scoreless for nearly five minutes during the fourth quarter.

The outcome remained unclear until Dylan Schumacher’s free throw with 34 seconds left.

Prairie played Lapwai for the district title Tuesday, Feb. 20 — after this week’s print edition had gone to press.

Lapwai advances

LEWISTON — With cautious offense and tight defense, the Kamiah boys built a 16-9 first-quarter lead over Lapwai Feb. 13, but Lapwai went on to win, 67-33. The Lewiston Tribune reported the Kubs’ early lead wilted under long-range shooting by Emmit Taylor III and Keith Kipp Jr., fed by the defensive pressure which ultimately held Kamiah’s top scorers to single digits. Luke Snyder (6 points), Ben Dunning (5) and Kaleb Oatman (5) paced Kamiah; Taylor scored a game-high 20 points for Lapwai.

Then, in a Feb. 14 eliminator, Kamiah beat Clearwater Valley 51-42, with the KHS boys scoring ten more on free throws (17) than CV attempted all night (7). Laban Francis (15 points) and Trayse Mangun (11) led CV, and Ben Dunning (15), Kaleb Oatman (15) and Luke Snyder (12) led Kamiah.

Kamiah faced Potlatch in a loser-out game Feb. 20 at LCSC, after the Feb. 21 Free Press went to the printers.
