A 58-44 Prairie win over Potlatch last Thursday night, Feb. 22, all but paved the Pirates’ road to state; on their way to this week’s 1AD1 title tournament at Vallivue High School, the Prairie boys ran over Wallace 65-48 last Saturday at Post Falls.
Against Potlatch, Hunter Chaffee (18 points), Spencer Schumacher (13) and Devin Ross (12) all scored double-digits. Then, against Wallace, Schumacher scored 20, Ross scored 19 and Chaffee scored 11.
Coming – Prairie (17-3) will play District III champion Ambrose at 3 p.m. MT March 1 in Caldwell, with the winner to face the Valley-Riverstone winner at 6:15 p.m. MT in the semifinal the next night.
District II champion Lapwai is set to play Liberty Charter at 8 p.m. MT Thursday night and, with a win, would play the Grace-Oakley winner in the semifinal at 8 p.m. MT Friday night.
The 1AD1 state championship game is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 3, at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa.
Ambrose enters the tournament 17-7 having had one opponent in common with Prairie: Lapwai beat Ambrose 68-38 in early December – about a week before the Wildcats beat Prairie 67-33. Since then, Ambrose has averaged about 52 points per game while allowing about 43 per game over 24 games. Prairie has averaged about 51 points for and about 41 points against in 24 games so far.
Lapwai doubles Prairie in district title game
When the Whitepine League’s regular season headliners met in the District II title game, each team had a relatively lopsided win over the other already to its credit.
Last Tuesday night, Lapwai took another turn on top, beating the Prairie boys 58-29 on high-volume scoring by Emmit Taylor III (24 points) and Kendall Leighton (20) and withering defense, which held PHS to one double-digit scorer: Hunter Chaffee (10).
