Holding all but Jacob Vanderwall to single digits, the St. Maries boys beat Grangeville 67-40 in the first of a best-of-three for the district’s only state berth. The next night, Feb. 22, St. Maries won again, 64-56, on a night Blake Darr and Colby Kennedy led Grangeville in scoring.
St. Maries dominated during the early part of the first game and built a 37-26 halftime lead, after which GHS did not close within double-digits. Vanderwall finished with 11 points including nine free throws.
The second game was tied, 22-all, at halftime, but St. Maries unleashed a big run during the third quarter that put Grangeville behind by 17 starting the fourth. A surge early in the fourth quarter narrowed that lead to single-digits, but St. Maries held on to the end.
St. Maries is set to play Nampa Christian in the first round of the state tournament at 8 p.m. MT March 1 at Capital High School in Boise.
