POCATELLO Parker Walters and Carson Morrow won 2A state wrestling championships last weekend, Feb. 23-24.
Grangeville’s Walters (285) pinned all four who stood in his way, beating Ririe’s Nick Gundersen, Raft River’s Taylen Grush, Malad’s Skyler Coombs and Melba’s Ty Bahem.
Clearwater Valley’s Morrow (152) won a 6-5 decision over Ririe’s Rustin Rinderknecht in the final.
To reach the title bout, Morrow pinned West Jefferson’s Genio Lemus, New Plymouth’s Josiah Campbell and Bear Lake’s Hayden Hunt.
In team scoring, CV tied for sixth with district rival St. Maries, as each team totaled 94 points. Ririe won the team title with 134.
In addition to Morrow’s big win, among the nine Rams who competed at Holt Arena, Lane Schilling (170) and Davis McElroy (160) placed fifth, and Ty Dominguez (160), Bubba Summers (160) and Christian Fabbi (126) placed sixth.
For Grangeville, the four who competed brought back three medals including Walters’ title. Chase Adkison (195) took sixth, having won his third consolation match 25-23 on a tiebreaker. Brandon Stump (220) won all the way to the title match, in which Marsing’s Mason Hall widened a narrow lead in the third period into a 16-8 win.
Kamiah’s Peyton Whipple (182) secured fourth with a 9-6 consolation semifinal win over Prairie’s Jace Perrin (182), who took fifth in the weight class.
Also competing at state for local schools were: for Clearwater Valley, Landon Olsen (98), Tristin Dominguez (120) and Cedar Fisher (145); for Grangeville, Blake Courtney (145); for Kamiah, Johnnie Raymond (113), Mike MacMenamin (120), Brody MacCord (138) and Layten Gould (220); and for Prairie, Sierra McWilliams (106) and Dalton Ross (113).
