Abby Gates has been working as a Kids Klub AmeriCorps employee since August.
As of Tuesday, January 16, 2018
GRANGEVILLE For Abby Gates, working at Kids Klub is like a homecoming of sorts.
“I attended here as a child,” smiled Gates, 18.
A Grangeville High School graduate of 2017, Gates saw the chance to work at Kids Klub as “a great opportunity,” she said.
Gates is an AmeriCorps employee and said she felt through the program she could give back to her community, and at the same time gain experience.
“I have learned so much – it’s very hands-on and informative,” she expressed.
Gates said her favorite part of the job so far – she began in August 2017 – is getting to know each child on a personal level.
“Learning their favorite games, snacks, their personalities – it’s been very rewarding,” she said. “It’s just a lot of fun.”
The Kids Klub experience, working with kids in preschool through the junior high ages in the various programs, will come in handy for Gates: She plans to attend Lewis-Clark State College in the fall and study early childhood development, she said.
“I have always wanted to be a preschool teacher, so being able to work at Kids Klub is really helping me prepare for that,” she emphasized.
For the long hall, Gates said she would like to take her experience to Africa.
“I have done some research, and I know there are many orphanages there that could use compassionate child care and educators,” she said.
When she isn’t working, Gates enjoys reading and writing. She will work at Kids Klub through its summer programming.
