RIGGINS Riggins students will have a week’s reprieve to get over the flu and other illnesses lingering in its halls.
Salmon River Joint School District 243 Superintendent James Doramus issues a letter to parents Monday, Jan. 29, that school will be closed for the rest of the week.
The number of student absences at the beginning of the day today was 30 percent district wide. This is 5 percent higher than they were last Wednesday at 25 percent district wide, Doramus said in the letter. The number of absences at the junior-senior high was 22 percent and the number of absences at the elementary was 39 percent.
“[The time off will] allow the students and staff to get well in hopes of breaking the cycle of re-infecting each other,” he said.
School will resume Monday, Feb. 5. All junior high and elementary school activities will be canceled for the week. High school basketball will not be canceled as long as the student athletes remain healthy.
Doramus said during the weekend, the maintenance staff sprayed 20 gallons of disinfectant throughout the school district. They will continue to do additional disinfecting of the buildings during the flu season.
