Last week I told you that a Quilt of Valor was presented to John Graham at the Memorial Day celebration but did not give his bio, so here it is:
John Graham joined the United States Marines Oct. 15, 1965. He attended boot training in MCRD San Diego; basic and advanced training at Camp Pendleton, Calif; Army jump school with the 101st Airborne at Fort Benning, Ga; and special forces training at 29 Palms, Calif. John was assigned to force recon and served two tours in Southeast Asia, mostly in Cambodia and Laos. He shared that he was sent home in August of 1969, but received his honorable discharge in the mail in November of that year. I guess that it is somewhat unusual to receive it via mail. He also said on behalf of himself and others who were there, “We hope our children and grandchildren will never have to do what we did or see what we saw.” As to how John came to be in Elk City, it’s simple. He likes the woods and the fresh air.
I will have information on two more Quilt of Valor presentations next week.
Sew-Help-Me Quilters presented a second Quilt of Honor to SPC4 Corporal Craig A. Butcher who served in the U.S. Army from July 1973 to July 1977, part of the time as a Red-Eye Gunner in South Korea. (See photo)
