Owe an apology; thank board for its open dialogue with me

Letter to the Editor

After going over teacher salary schedules and contracts with a retired teacher, I owe Mrs. McKinney an apology. She was correct when she stated that teachers do not get paid for spring, summer or Christmas breaks. I had based my earlier comments on the monthly payroll records for MVSD. However, MVSD teachers are hired based on a negotiated contract for 188 days, which amounts to the actual school year excluding spring, summer or Christmas breaks and their salary is broken down into 12-month increments. Salaries for full-time teachers at MVSD range from $34,258 to $62,500, averaging out to $48,516. This teacher would receive 1/12 of said salary on the 25th day of the month for 12 months for the contracted 188 work days or $258 per day. If this salary is spread out over 12 months, excluding Saturdays and Sundays, this teacher would get $205 per day.

The district informed Mr. Warford that District 244 does not recite the Pledge of Allegiance at their meetings. I checked with seven local school boards and, sadly, only five of the seven do recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

I have been attending school board meetings for the past 2-1/2 years, and I would like to thank the board members for allowing me to ask them questions, but more importantly, for the board having an open dialogue with me. I sincerely hope we can get back to the old way of doing business.
