Meeting, field trip on fuels project; Riggins events set June 29-30

— An informational meeting and field trip are set for this Friday and Saturday, June 29-30, in Riggins on the Florence Fuels project. Purpose of the two-day event is for the public to become familiar with the project area and to collaborate with the Forest Service on the development of the proposed action.

  • The public meeting is Friday, June 29, 5-6:30 p.m. (MST) at the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area office in Riggins (1339 Highway 95 South, Riggins, Idaho 83549).
  • The field trip is Saturday, June 30, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. (MST), beginning and ending at the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area in Riggins. Participants are asked to provide their own transportation, bring outdoor clothing, water and a lunch.

Project purposes are to reduce the hazardous fuels adjacent to the Historic Florence Cemetery and private property; and create a fuel break near the vicinity of Florence. The project area is located approximately 15 miles east of Riggins, entirely on National Forest System lands in Idaho County and administered by the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests. The project area is in the headwaters of Little Slate Creek and includes tributaries to the Lower Salmon River.

This area is in a Designated Landscape Treatment Area identified by the Governor of Idaho under Section 602 of the Healthy Forest Restoration Act (HFRA), as amended by the Agriculture Act of 2014 (Farm Bill).
