Just in time for summer reading programs, the board of trustees for the Prairie-River Library District decided all overdue fines accrued on minor accounts within the district will be waived and no further overdue fines will accrue for patrons younger than 18 as of June 1.
This decision is part of a movement to remove barriers to children’s access to library materials.
“The trustees’ philosophy is that our purpose is to get books into people’s hands, not to be debt collectors,” stated Prairie-River Library District Director Lisa Curnutt in her announcement to employees last week.
Accounts with charges are currently being reviewed and cleared, so be sure to speak with a librarian if you feel charges should be waived. Charges for lost or damaged items may still apply. Speak with a librarian at your local branch for more information. All Prairie-River Library locations and hours can be found at prld.org or call PRLD headquarters in Lapwai at 208-843-7254.
The Prairie-River Library District includes libraries in Kamiah, Kooskia, Lapwai, Craigmont, Culdesac, Nezperce, Peck and Winchester.
