The season has gone well for Grangeville’s softball team, outfielder and pitcher Micaela Farris said May 1.
“There are a lot of improvments we’ve worked on and made,” she said. “We play Orofino this week and we have a pretty good chance with them.”
Others on the squad have stepped up their play.
“Cassie Chandler is one to keep an eye out for, and my sister, Mackenzie is doing really well,” Micaela said. “Pitching is a little different this season, and coach [Calen Long] has us learning some new pitches, change-up and screwball.”
Farris pointed back at the earlier games against Orofino as one of the team’s best, and pointed back to the home run she hit against Kendrick as a prime individual moment this softball season.
For the Farris girls and others across North Central Idaho, late spring and summer is also rodeo season, and it began in earnest last weekend with a district rodeo in Weiser.
“I’ll be in White Bird for high school rodeo this weekend and at Riggins for royalty,” she said. “It went really well at Weiser, but I had to use my old horse who didn’t really know much.”
The high school rodeo starts at 9 a.m. each day May 5-6, and the Riggins Rodeo starts each of the same days at 1:30 p.m. MT.
Softball season is set to continue with a couple of 4 p.m. home starts, May 3 against Orofino and May 4 against Kendrick.
All spring sports are rapidly coming to their conclusions, with state qualifications and district playoffs coming up May 9-10. The 2A state softball tournament is May 18-19 at Pocatello.
