— Grangeville’s second consecutive district title came on the heels of coach Lee Nadiger’s first regular season title, as the Bulldogs ran over Orofino 12-2 and blunted a last-inning rally by St. Maries to win the district title game 3-2.

“I knew St. Maries was going to play better than they did up in Grangeville,” Nadiger said after starting pitcher Chase Adkison struck out the final batter in the top of the seventh inning of the finale. “The game at our place wasn’t indicative of who they are.”

St. Maries took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth, which Adkison led off with his second triple of the day. He scored on a single by Tyler Stephens, who advanced on a single by Ethan Bonn and was driven in by Easton McEwen. Bonn scored on a single by Hunter Schoo.

During the early game, Adkison led off with a single and went on to hit a bases-loaded triple, as well as a home run Nadiger thought went 400 feet.

“That was the best game we’ve played all year,” Nadiger said. “The senior guys have been working their tails off, and to have them see the results on the field — there’s nothing better as a coach.

Coming — Grangeville’s state tournament begins at 9:30 a.m. May 17 at Nampa Christian High School. It continues May 18-19.
