Grangeville junior Chase Adkison — who his coach regards as “the toughest out in the State of Idaho” — faced two-strike counts on several occasions during the 2A District I-II baseball tournament Monday, May 7.
With the bases loaded during the bottom of the second inning against the Maniacs, Adksion mashed a 1-2 pitch into the right-center gap at Orofino and tied a school record for most triples in a season.
Facing a two-strike count during the bottom of the third, Adkison launched a home run deep beyond the fence in left-center.
And during the bottom of the fifth in the late game against St. Maries, Adkison slugged a 2-2 pitch off the fence in right field.
Asked for his thoughts on the games, Adkison praised the defensive play of middle infielders Tescher Harris and Trent Hunter in support of his and Tyler Stephens’ pitching.
Having come into the tournament 31-for-47 on the season (.660 average), Adkison trailed a school record for most triples in a season by one — and ended up setting one of the two marks he’s close to making this spring. The GHS single-season runs scored record will be in reach when the Bulldogs head to Nampa Christian for three games and a shot at the 2A state title later this month.
Four games are scheduled each of the first two days of the tournament, May 17-19, with games scheduled to start as early as 9:30 a.m. MT and as late as 5:30 p.m. MT May 17-18.
The tournament’s final day features three games, with the consolation final at 10 a.m. MT and the championship game at 4 p.m. MT.
