Shepherd: Can trust him on tough issues

Letter to the Editor

Please support Paul Shepherd’s re-election bid to Idaho House of Representatives seat District 7B. Paul has authored and introduced one of the most important pieces of legislation into the House of Representatives.

House Bill 461 from the 2018 legislative session would have ensured that Idaho has a voice when it comes to constitutional protections. When this legislation becomes law in Idaho, our state government will be the final arbiter on how the federal government may operate in Idaho. The Constitution for the United States must be the standard that provides our checks and balances on federal powers. For far too long, we have allowed the Congress, the federal agencies and the federal court system to trample our liberties by defying the constitutional limitations placed upon them. Paul Shepherd will continue to champion this effort in Idaho and is the right man for the job.

I have spoken with Paul on the gas tax issue. He isn’t comfortable with raising taxes on the citizens of Idaho without input from District 7 and for extremely compelling reasons. When this legislation was proposed, Paul heard from the highway districts and felt that if we were to have, and to maintain, our roads and bridges in Idaho, some measure was necessary. He was also convinced that if support for a smaller gas tax was not given, a larger gas tax would be proposed. To provide for our transportation needs in District 7 and to stave of a much larger gas tax, Paul grudgingly voted to increase funding through a small gas tax hike. We can trust Paul on the tough issues.
