KOOSKIA At the Aug. 20 MVSD 244 board meeting, discussion continued about the Elk City Library.
District librarian Lynn Johnson let the board know Elk City Library is part of the ValNet consortium which the district pays a $13,000 annual fee to be part of.
The fee is based on the number of items in the total collection, number of users and the circulation,” she said.
She explained though Elk City community members may not use the ValNet system a lot, other areas request items from Elk City quite frequently.
“There are requests from homeschoolers for some of Elk City’s unique collection,” she said, adding that the library collection there numbers about 10,000, with half the collection acquired by the community/volunteers through donations, while the other half has been provided by the school district.
“Is this ValNet something the community of Elk City could take on for themselves?” and house the library in its own facility, questioned trustee Mike Dominquez.
Johnson said this has been discussed but no decisions had been made.
Chair Lot Smith said the topic will be broached again at the October meeting.
“That’s the perfect time as that meeting is scheduled to be held in Elk City,” he said.
